CLEAN WATER COMES TO A DESPERATE VILLAGE

On 04 December 2007, the PAFID officially turned-over the potable water system to the 75-household Subanen community in the far-flung barangay of  Datagan in Sominot, Zamboanga del Sur.  Chieftain Paterno Octao received the pipe-wrench during the symbolic turn-over ceremonies attended by community members and barangay government officials.

Thirty-five days of manual work resulted in the construction of an intake box; a 3-kilometer long PE pipe-system; a 12,000-liter ferro-cement tank and 24 tapstands in strategic places in the community including both elementary and high schools.

A lot of factors helped in the accomplishment of the project.  The community members provided manpower counterpart; the elementary and highschool students brought river-sand on their way to school; the barangay and the Municipal Government which doubted the feasibility and viability of the project at the start, provided additional pipes and the food-for-work counterpart which was crucial for the completion of the project.

This project would not have been possible without the support of the MISEREOR through the National Land Tenure Program.
